Light entering an input fiber can emerge at one or more outputs, with its power distribution potentially varying based on wavelength and polarization. These couplers can be manufactured using various methods, such as thermally fusing fibers to achieve intimate contact between their cores. When all involved fibers are single-mode—supporting only one mode per polarization direction for a given wavelength—there are specific physical limitations on the coupler's performance. Notably, combining two or more inputs of the same optical frequency into a single-polarization output can result in significant excess losses. However, these restrictions do not apply when using different input wavelengths. Certain couplers can effectively combine inputs at different wavelengths into one output with minimal losses. In this context, a fiber optic adapter is employed.
